Last Saturday, we were invited to a St. Patrick's Day brunch at a friend;s house. As I was thinking about what to bring as a hostess gift, I realized that I seldom buy hostess gifts. If I have time, I like to bake something for host family so that they don't have to think about what to make for breakfast the next morning. If it is summer, I would take an armload of vegetables from my kitchen garden. If the hostess is someone who loves to cook, then the gift might be a spice blend such as garam masala powder or masala spice blend, recipes which are featured in my cookbook. But more often than not, I bring fresh flowers from the garden as a hostess gift. Spring is the time for proteas and wax flowers in my garden, so I arranged proteas as a hostess gift.
Both my cookbooks feature elaborate flower arrangements and table settings. Almost all of the flowers featured in my cookbooks were picked from my own garden. I know that I am little obsessed with the flowers but it is a healthy hobby.
My friend was very happy to receive these flowers.
I try to arrange the flowers before I take them to the party, so that the host can quickly drop the flowers in a vase and go back to the party instead of having to take time to arrange them. Depending on the event, I may include a vase as the part of the gift.
Flowers are the best gift to give or receive in my opinion. What do you think?

ReplyDeleteI agree! When guests bring flowers that can be quickly set into a vase, they are most welcome! Homemade cookies or breakfast breads are also my go-to hostess gifts.
