My Treasure Chest

There is something that I must confess: I am a garden addict. I can't decide which I like better, gardening or cooking. I think I am addicted to both. For the past six weeks, I have been very busy ordering seeds from all my favorite catalogues.  Today, I want to share what I call my treasure chest. I believe that one person's trash can be another person's treasure.

This is what I call my treasure chest. One of our friend gave us nice tea as a Christmas gift this year. When we finished the tea, I saved the box to organize my seed pockets.

My initial collection of seeds and different colored onion bulbs

Here are my almost final collection of seeds that I collected from seed catalogues and garden centers. I try to grow all my seedlings form seeds. If you grow your own seedlings, you have a choice of what you want to grow in your kitchen garden. If you are solely dependent on garden centers for seedlings, you have to rely on what they are offering. Garden centers have to cater to the general public interest. If you want to grow specialty items such as snake gourd we have no choice but to grow from seeds.

I try to mark each pack of seeds with the year that I bought them. If you store seeds properly in a cool, dry place, you can use them for 2-3 years without any problem. As soon as I am done with sowing seeds, I organize them in my treasure chest and store them in my refrigerator until next year.

Here are some of my favorite seed catalogues:
Burpee
Johnneseeds
and my personal favorite for Indian seeds
Seeds of India
