This past weekend, I had friends visiting from North Carolina, who I was friends with in Grand Forks, North Dakota. This was the first time these friends were visiting us in California. A lot has changed since our newly married days to having grown children. It was a rainy day, which is uncommon to see in LA (we did brag a little over the phone about Southern California weather always being sunny). Too bad they couldn't enjoy the garden in the rain. After catching up on our children, careers and aspirations for future, we sat down for a lunch featuring chicken biryani and dahi vada, which are recipes from my book. My daughter made apple crisp that morning, and started baking it after we sat down for lunch. We had lunch with the very seductive aroma from the oven while enjoying the company of our dear friends. As I always say, it is not the beautiful table or gourmet food that makes the meal special, but it is the people that makes any meal memorable! It was a beautiful heartfelt visit to reunite with old friends and share a meal together.
I set the table with white mums from the garden.
Since the flowers are simple, I used Royal Doulton Haddon Hall china to compliment the flowers.
Green sapote and variegated figs from my orchard are incorporated into the tablescape.
My favorite salt cellar.
Figs are served in a porcelain egg carton.
Notice that all the flowers are arranged below eye level so as not to interrupt the conversation.
Small white porcelain pitchers are used to arrange flowers on the table.
