Hostess Gift

Yesterday we were invited to a dinner party. I was thinking of what to give to the hostess. I rarely buy something to give as a hosted gift. My hostess gifts are always something from my kitchen, flowers from the garden or something form my orchard. October is the month of abundance of fruits at the Nunna farm. While the apples and pears are winding down, white sapotes, pomegranates, persimmons and jujubis are all at their peak to harvest. While I was thinking of a hostess gift, in the morning hours, my husband harvested white sapotes from the orchard. Well, yesterday's hostess gift was basket full of white sapotes. What could be better than organic fruit from the orchard?

White sapotes are one of my favorite fruits that we grow in our orchard. They are native to central America and Mexico and it is a distant relative to citrus, though it doesn't taste anything like citrus. It has two to five seeds in the middle, surrounded by creamy yellow flesh. When they ripen, chilled fruit can be peeled and cut around the pith into pieces and served in a cup as a dessert. It tastes like a custard dessert made with a combination of banana and mango flavors. I think of it is a nature made sweet delicious custard fruit, which I love to devour at any time of the day.
