Designing a cake

Last weekend I was asked to design and make a cake for a friend's 60th birthday. This friends's hobbies include tennis, golf, cards, and cars. He also founded an investment club in our town. Well, it was a challenge to create a cake to support all his hobbies and without making it cluttered. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of custom designing the cake based on the person's hobbies and interests in mind. The birthday boy's favorite carrot cake is wrapped with fondant icing and all the decorations are made with gum past icing. Here are some images to share with you all.

Anniversary Cake

Last Saturday, two very good friends of mine, Viji and Kumar, celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Another friend hosted the event. I opted to make the cake. Unlike the previous party, my job was only to focus on the cake. I borrowed one of Viji's favorite saris and tried to copy the design from the sari onto the cake. This cake was designed exclusively for the anniversary couple in mind. I want to design the cake with authenticity and seasonal azaleas.

I developed this recipe based on the couples' taste. The cardamom cake is filled with mango butter cream and pomegranate sauce (you can't go wrong with the flavors of cardamom, mango and pomegranates with Indians). This cake was a great hit at the party.

I was honored to make this cake for the most loving and kind couple.

Part III - The Cake

After planning the invitation and the table settings, the cake was the next thing that was planned for my friends' anniversary party. As if cooking dinner for 50 people is not enough, I planned to make a cake with handmade flowers and lacework. Don't you think that is a little crazy? Cake decorating was my beloved hobby when my children were little. I made all the cakes for my kids' birthdays. Then I bought lots of literature and taught my self the Australian and British methods of cake decorating.

After moving to California, my cake decorating hobby had to take the back seat (I was busy driving the kids to their activities, working, gardening, cooking and of course writing the book). When I decided to plan a party for my friends' 25th anniversary, I thought, I had to make a cake with fondant icing and handmade flowers. I had to see whether I could still make the cake the way I used to. At first I struggled; my first roses were looking like an alien flowers. I didn't want to give up. I sat with it until I got it right. I guess it is like riding a bicycle. Once you know, you will never forget. These flowers don't look too bad, right?

The color theme of the party, teal, was carried to the cake, too.
